Two prosecuted for fly-tipping and three prosecuted for failing to assist with enquiries into suspected fly tipping offences in °¬²æAƬ

°¬²æAƬ Council has successfully prosecuted five individuals for fly-tipping or failing to assist with a fly-tipping investigation, as part of an ongoing commitment to tackling waste crime.

  • William Johnson, Director of WJ Roofline Ltd, pleaded guilty after enforcement officers obtained video evidence of a van bearing the company logo emptying a trailer full of controlled waste on an access road near Cwmcrachen Caravan Site, Nantyglo. Mr Johnson, aged 34 of Pontypool, was fined £1,333, and ordered to pay a surcharge of £533 with costs of £1,196, after admitting charges of allowing the escape of waste and failing to provide evidence of proper disposal arrangements.

  • Craig Hucklebridge, aged 36 of Ebbw Vale, was identified through CCTV dumping a black refuse bag in a lay by near Oak Street, Abertillery. After failing to pay an initial fixed penalty, he pleaded guilty to the offence of fly-tipping at Cwmbran Magistrates Court and was fined £400 with costs of £1,426 and a victim surcharge of £160.

  • Ashley Martin, aged 37, of Cwm, was also prosecuted for failing to assist the Council with its investigation into the illegal dumping of waste in Cemetery Road. Martin repeatedly failed to assist with the council investigation. He was found guilty at Cwmbran Magistrates Court of an offence under Section 108 4(l) of the Environment Act 1995and fined £600 with costs of £751 and a victim surcharge of £240.

  • Christina Seaward, aged 46 of Cwmbran, has been fined after failing to assist the Council with its investigation into the illegal dumping of waste at Tafarnaubach Industrial Estate, Tredegar. She was charged with an offence under Section 108 4(l) of the Environment Act 1995 and found guilty at Cwmbran Magistrates Court. She was fined £600 and ordered to pay costs of £751 and a victim surcharge of £240.

  • Lauren Williams, aged 33 of Rhymney, was prosecuted for failing to assist the Council with its investigation into the illegal dumping of waste in Ebbw Vale. She was subsequently found guilty of an offence under Section 108 4(l) of the Environment Act 1995 and fined £600, with additional costs of £652 and a victim surcharge of £240.

These cases demonstrate the Council’s proactive approach, and the use of enforcement powers to identify offenders and hold them accountable, working to protect local communities and the environment.

Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Environment, Councillor Tommy Smith said:

“Fly-tipping is completely unacceptable and impacts our communities, and the environment. These prosecutions send a clear message that we are active in identifying offenders and are prepared to take firm action against those who choose to dump waste illegally.â€
