Families First

Families First is a Welsh Government–funded programme that supports families experiencing difficulties. The team focuses on early help, prevention, and whole-family support.

Type of Support we can offer:

Young Carers

The Young Carers project supports young people who help care for someone, such as a parent, sibling, grandparent or neighbour affected by illness, mental health issues or substance misuse. The project also offers a weekly youth club.

Young Adult Carers

The Young Adult Carer Service supports young people who help care for someone who is unwell or needs extra help at home, including giving medication or emotional support. If this sounds like you, you may be eligible for the service. Please get in touch for more information: familysupporthub@blaenau-gwent.gov.uk

Disabilities Support

Families First supports families with disabled children, helping them access entitlements and opportunities. We run a weekly Art Club for 16–25s and an integrated play group for children with complex needs and their families. We also help families find suitable play and leisure activities. All sessions are inclusive and open to everyone.

Parent and Carer Support Group (Small Steps)

Families First and Flying Start run a monthly support group for parents and carers of children with a disability diagnosis, going through ISCAN/SPACE ND, or who attended Little Explorers. It takes place on the last Wednesday of each month, 9:30–11am, at The Heart of the Valleys Integrated Children’s Centre (NP13 3BN).

Parenting Support

Parenting support can be offered one‑to‑one at home, in a group, or online. It can help with:

  • Building a better relationship with your child
  • Handling difficult behaviour
  • Encouraging positive behaviour
  • Improving family relationships
  • Joining parenting programmes

Mediation

We offer a Mediation Service for families supported by Families First, Flying Start or Children’s Services. For more information, please contact us at: familysupporthub@blaenau-gwent.gov.uk

SPACE Wellbeing

SPACE‑Wellbeing is a single point of access for children’s emotional wellbeing. It helps families and professionals get early support with issues like housing, money worries, parenting, children’s mental health and behaviour.

In °¬˛ćAƬ, the SPACE‑Wellbeing panel meets every week to make sure children and families get the right help at the right time. Support may be given directly by a service, or specialist staff may advise the professionals already working with the family.
