Young °Ĵ²ĉAĈĴ filmmakers celebrate where they live in new documentary

A group of young people have come together to make a film about what °Ĵ²ĉAĈĴ really means to them.

‘Our °Ĵ²ĉAĈĴ’ was shown to the group’s family and friends, as well as local councillors and partners, in a special screening at the Metropole Theatre in Abertillery.

The documentary focuses on the people and places that mean most to the young people involved, told in their own words, and harnessing the valleys community spirit which they value.

The film is part of the BG Arts: Make It Film project, delivered in partnership with learning technology company Aspire 2Be and funded by the UK Government through the Trailblazers Programme in °Ĵ²ĉAĈĴ. Through hands-on training and expert support, participants gained a full introduction to the filmmaking process, developing skills in research, scriptwriting, interviewing, presenting and production management.

Erin Richards said:

"Being able to work on this project allowed me to grow my confidence and even reconnect with a friend I lost touch with after school. It was a really great experience that allowed me to develop transferrable skills that I would love to use in the future with whatever opportunities are presented to me."

Frankie Baker said:

"Working with Aspire 2 Be and BG Arts on this youth film project was great fun. I learnt a lot about documentary film making, met new people and made new experiences. I got to tell my story and had the opportunity to show how culturally rich °Ĵ²ĉAĈĴ really is."

Councillor Sue Edmunds, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People & Families said:

“I really enjoyed the film, well done to everyone involved! This project has empowered young people to tell positive stories about their communities while building vital life and work skills. Alongside producing a professional-quality documentary, participants strengthened their communication, oracy, digital competency and leadership abilities. Many also reported a boost in confidence and pride in their local area.

“Our recent Citizens Assembly on the °Ĵ²ĉAĈĴ Deal told us they really wanted to see young people involved in shaping the places in which they live and having a pride in their local area, this has given young people the opportunity to do just that, and they have fully embraced it. Thank you all.”
